There were three farmers in the north, as they were passing by
Жили на севере три фермера, как-то раз повстречались они,
They swore an oath so mighty oh that Barleycorn should die
И каждый из них дал могучую клятву: должно умереть Ячменное зерно.
One of them said: drown him and the other sad: hang him high
Один предложил его утопить, другие сказали — повесить,
For whoever will stick to Barleycorn a-begging he will die
И кто бы из нас Ячменя не прикончил, он умрёт всё равно.
They put poor Barley into a sack an a cold an rainy day
Засунули они в мешок холодным дождливым днём беднягу Ячменя,
And took him out to cornfields and buried him in the clay
Вытащили в кукурузные поля и погребли в глине.
Frost and snow began to melt and dew began to fall
Начали таять снега и морозы, стала появляться роса,
When Barleygrain put up his head and he soon surprised them all
Когда Ячменное зерно поднял свою голову, он их всех заприметил...
Being in the summer season and the harvest coming on
Был летний сезон, наступал урожай,
It's the time he stands up in the field with a beard like any man
Он в это время ходил по полям с бородой, как и любой другой,
The reaper then came with his sickle and used me barberously
Но тут явился жнец с серпом и варварски со мной обошёлся –
He cut me in the middle so small and he cut me above the knee
Напополам меня разрубил и укоротил выше колен.
The next came was the binder and he looked at me with a frown
Следующим был сноповяз, хмурым взглядом меня обвёл,
For in the middle there was a thistle which pulled his courage down
Слегка смущало его храбрость то, что из меня торчал чертополох.
The farmer came with his pitch fork and he pierced me to the heart
Явился фермер с вилами и меня в самое сердце пронзил,
Like a thief, a rogue or a highwayman they tied me to the cart
Словно вор, мошенник или разбойник меня к телеге он привязал.
The thresher came with his big flail and soon he broke my bones
Пришёл молотильщик с громадным цепом и все мои кости раздробил,
Could grieve the heart of any man to hear my sighs and moans
Мои стоны и вздохи, пожалуй, смогли любое человеческое сердце опечалить.
The next thing that they've done to me they steeped me in the well
А следующим этапом было сбрасывание меня в колодец,
They left me there for a day and night until I began to swell

And next thing that they've done to me they dried me in a kiln

They used me ten times worse, than that they ground me in the mill

The Barleygrain is a comical grain, it makes men sigh and moan
Ячменное зерно — такое забавное, оно заставляет мужчин вздыхать и стонать,
For when they drink a glass or two they forget their wives and home
Ибо когда он пропускает пару стаканчиков, то забывает и жену, и дом.
The drunkard is a dirty man, he used me worst of all
Пьяница — мерзкий человек, он обращается со мной хуже всех,
He drank me up in his dirty mouth an he tumbled against the wall
Он заливает меня в свой грязный рот, еле-еле бродя по стеночке...
