Jack went out one stormy day

To see where his feet would go,
По воле ног своих,
They took him from his sleeping town
Из сонного прочь городка,
Across land both high and low,
Чрез край гор и низин,
They took him through the velvet streets
Сквозь бархат улиц, где весь люд
Where men walked on their toes,
На цыпочках ходил,
And down the slopes
И в погреба,
Where bottled hell
Где в склянках ад*
And blind men lie in rows
И ряд слепцов лежит*
Jack walked through the treacle swamps
Джек липкую топь пересёк,
And crossed the salt dry plains,
Прошел солончаки,
He passed a house where tall, thin dogs
И дом больших и тощих псов,
Pulled on their iron chains,
Сидящих на цепи,
He heard the songs of seed germ girls
Он слышал, песней греют луг
Who warmed the frozen fields,
Девчонки-семена,
And as Jack walked
Джек ощутил
He felt the corn
Своей пятой –
Push up his tired heels
Ростков идет волна
He saw the heathens' heather hills,
Он видел вереск диких гор
He watched a boiling sea,
И море кипятка,
He met a man with wooden hands
С руками из плодовых древ
Carved from an old fruit tree.
Он встретил старика,
The old man said he dreamt at night
И тот сказал, что в снах его
Of blossom roots and knives,
Лишь корни и ножи,
And that night when

Jack went to sleep
Когда уснул,
He dreamt of damson pies
Увидел чернослив
Jack walked out one stormy day
Джек ненастным вышел днём,
To see where his feet would go,
По воле ног своих,
They took him north they took him east
Шёл путь на север, на восток,
But never took him home
Лишь к дому нет пути
